Can I burn firewood in a woodburning stove in London?
Absolutely, there are many stove manufacturers who make woodburning stoves which are suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas (SCA) such as London. Following the introduction of new regulations by Defra which came into effect in January 2022 all new woodburning stoves will be required to meet the new Ecodesign legislation requirements. Some stoves manufactured before this new legislation came into effect are recorded as: Exempt Appliances (see link for details)

What type of wood should I burn?
Hardwoods such as Ash, Oak, Birch, Sycamore and Cherry are all great for use in woodburning stoves as they will burn hotter and longer than their softwood counterparts. Softwoods such as Cedar, Pine, Conifer and Douglas Fir. These are all great for fire-pits, camping and outdoor fires. They should be avoided in your Woodburning Stove as they will increase the soot and creosote in your chimney which will increase the risk of chimney fires.

What type(s) of wood should I not burn?
Most importantly do not burn ‘green’ wood, which is a term used to describe timber from a freshly cut living tree as it will be full of sap (mostly water). This is why firewood is either naturally seasoned or kiln dried to reduce the moisture content. This can be easily checked by using a suitable moisture meter, a content of 20% or lower is sufficient for most hardwoods to burn efficiently. Also never burn any type of treated wood that you may have found in a skip or acquired from a dubious source!

What are the risks of burning ‘green’ wood?
Burning green wood will lead to difficulties in starting your fire and will produce large quantities of smoke from your chimney or flue and most of the energy generated will be used to dry the moisture out of the timber rather than producing heat. It will also produce something called ‘Creosote’ a tar like substance that will line the walls of your chimney/flue and increases the risk of fire.

Where do you source your timber from?
At Urban Logs we source our firewood from local Forestry companies and local tree surgeons, ensuring that we reduce our carbon footprint by minimising the distance our firewood travels to our Croydon based Woodyard.

Do you recycle your packaging?
Absolutely, we use Polypropylene bags for packaging and delivering our premium quality firewood and we encourage our customers to recycle these by leaving them out with your next order and we will collect them this further reducing unnecessary journeys and again minimise our carbon emissions.
